Dr. Cheng is a forensic neuropsychologist trained at Stanford and Palo Alto University. Practicing since 2009, she has worked with a variety of populations. Soon after her postdoctoral training, she joined the Army and became a Captain serving in the military as a medical officer. There, she evaluated and treated soldiers with traumatic brain injuries and post traumatic stress disorder.

After a five-year commission, she retired from the Army and went on to spend 10 years working at a California state psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane. Working with some of the most severely mentally ill patients, Dr. Cheng gained additional experience in the assessment and treatment of complex neuropsychiatric issues. During this time, she also served as a Consulting Neuropsychologist at St. Jude’s Medical Center’s Stroke/Brain Injury Unit, focusing on evaluations of stroke and brain injury patients.

In 2017, Dr. Cheng expanded her practice and became a Qualified Medical Examiner in California. She specializes in evaluating neuropsychiatric conditions stemming from neurological insults. Dr. Cheng is known for her articulate and jargon-free communication, making her a valuable asset in legal settings where clarity is paramount. Her work is consistently praised for its precision and accessibility - qualities that make her highly sought after by legal professionals.

A Silicon Valley native, with roots in Orange County, Dr. Cheng understands the local context and brings a unique blend of professional expertise and personal relatability to her practice and testimony. She has a deep understanding of her clients’ needs and is dedicated to simplifying complex processes for all parties involved through clear and concise reports and testimonies. She takes pride in the consistent feedback of being easy to work with within the scope of medical-legal evaluations.

WHAT IS NEUROPSYCHOLOGY?

WHAT IS NEUROPSYCHOLOGY?

Neuropsychology studies the physiological processes of the nervous system and correlates cognitive functioning, psychiatric stability, and changes in behavior to alterations in the brain.  These may include damage from traumatic brain injury (i.e. Concussion), neurodevelopmental disorders (i.e. Autism), neurological diseases (i.e. Alzheimer’s, stroke), and severe mental illness (i.e. Schizophrenia).

Neuropsychological evaluations measure a variety of cognitive domains, including attention, memory, executive / visuospatial functioning, speech, reasoning, and mood and behavior. These evaluations allow the Neuropsychologist to determine brain capacity, which yields information about the structural and functional integrity of the brain. When combined with symptomatic presentation, imaging, and other collateral health information, the Neuropsychologist is able to diagnose and make recommendations regarding treatment surrounding rehabilitation.

Given their expertise, Neuropsychologists are frequently called upon in legal cases to provide expert testimony regarding the cognitive and psychiatric impact of brain injuries. Their expertise is instrumental in Workers’ Compensation, personal injury, and criminal cases, where the extent of neuropsychiatric damage needs to be assessed and communicated to a legal audience.
